Premature Severance by Zara J Day

I've been forced into the no-man's land between naval service and civilian life.

I can no longer relate to those who have never worn the uniform.

I am called a vet, yet to my comrades I'm now an outsider.

The bases and ships I lived on in the first decade of my adulthood

are only walkable now when I resume unfinished memories in my dreams.

I served during a period of relative peace, but I came home bearing scars.

My C-bag was packed with anxiety that now engulfs my hollow life.

I chose the new clothes, yet don't recognize the woman wearing them.

Her soul was hacked off. It still wears tan steel-toe boots aboard the carrier.

The instrument of this gruesome severance was a premature DD-214.
